April–May and September–October are the sweet spot: the rain has eased, the countryside is still green and there are far fewer people than at the peak of the Andean winter.
The route stays around 3,400 m above sea level. If you are coming from the coast, it is usual to spend a day or two acclimatising first: walk slowly, drink plenty of water and leave the alcohol for later. Tell us your itinerary and we will adjust the pace of the first day.
